RUNASIMI

Salasaca is an indigenous community located in the central highlands of Ecuador, in the province of Tungurahua. It is part of the larger Salasaca parish, near the town of Pelileo, and is known for its rich cultural heritage, particulary its traditions related to the Salasaca people, an indigenous group with a deep connection to the land and their ancestral practices.

The Salasaca people have a strong sense of pride in their cultural traditions, which include vibrant textil production, traditional agricultural practices, music, dance and festivals.

Salasaca is also notable for its efforts to preserve the Kichwa language, known by native speakers as RUNASIMI (language of the people), which is spoken alongside Spanish.

The community is an important example of Ecuador’s rich indigenous culture, who maintain a strong connection to their heritage.
